The increasing adoption of Digital Twins in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem is transforming how physical systems are monitored, controlled, and optimized. Digital Twins must interact with other twins, devices, and services, forming a complex distributed ecosystem where trust becomes a fundamental requirement. In this context, trust goes beyond security: it is about ensuring the reliability and integrity of data exchanged among Digital Twins and IoT devices. This tutorial delves into the concept of trust in Digital Twin ecosystems, focusing on how to establish confidence in the accuracy and consistency of data, even in environments where devices and networks are constantly evolving.
You'll learn how to implement strategies for trust management, ensure data provenance, and mitigate risks from faulty or compromised devices.
The goals of this tutorial:
- Illustrate the importance of trust in Digital Twin scenarios and explain how it differs from and complements security;
- Analyze behaviors and errors that undermine nodes' reliability;
- Highlight current deficiencies in community-proposed trust models;
- Discuss and test guidelines for developing a trust model, providing practical insights into crafting a model that evaluates the trustworthiness of IoT networks.

Michele Nitti

Michele Nitti is an Associate Professor at the University of Cagliari, Italy since 2014. He has been/is involved in the organization of several conferences: he has been Vertical and Topical Program Co-Chair for the IEEE WF-IoT 2022, General Chair for the IEEE IoT V&T Summit 2021 on Tourism, and Technical Program Co-Chair at the IEEE BMSB 2017.Currently, he is a member of the editorial board for the IEEE Internet of Things Journal, the Elsevier Computer Networks Journal and the MDPI IoT. Moreover, he is co-founder of an academic spin-off (GreenShare s.r.l.), which works in the mobility sector. He has been ranked in the "Top 2% World Ranking list of Scientists" for the years 2019-2024 and has received more than 5000 citations (source Google scholar). His main research interests are in Internet of Things (IoT), Digital Twins, and AI-driven systems, particularly focusing on trustworthy IoT ecosystems, human-centric digital twins, and the development of knowledge-based infrastructures enabling autonomous and cooperative behaviors in smart environments.

Claudio Marche

Claudio Marche is an Assistant Professor at the University of Cagliari, where he is a member of the Net4U research group. He received his Ph.D. in Electronic and Computer Engineering in 2023. His research focuses on the Internet of Things (IoT), Social Networks, Trust Management, and Cloud– Edge Computing. His scientific production includes numerous publications in leading journals, including IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, IEEE Transactions on Services Computing, and Computer Networks. He has also contributed to conference research through papers presented at flagship ComSoc events such as IEEE ICC, IEEE Globecom, and WF-IoT. In terms of editorial service, he is Associate Editor of the IEEE Internet of Things Journal and a member of the Topical Advisory Panel for MDPI Sensors. In addition, he is currently Secretary of the IEEE CTSoc Technical Committee on Smartphone and Mobile Device Technologies and of IEEE ComSoC Social Networks Technical Committee.
